MaxxBass provides a dramatic improvement in bass response and overall audio quality in systems constrained by budget, size or power consumption without increasing stress on the speakers or amplifiers. MaxxBass 101and 102 are the first MaxxBass hardware products for commercial sound installations such as:
- Public Address
- House of Worship
- Lecture Hall and Boardrooms
- Sound Reinforcement · Club Sound
- Multimedia Kiosk
Waves patented MaxxBass technology uses psycho-acoustics to deliver the sensation of lower frequency response without exceeding speaker driver excursion limits, adding or changing speakers or amplifiers, and without increased power consumption. MaxxBass has only a few simple controls and indicators on its front panel. Controls are provided for input trim, MaxxBass frequency, MaxxBass intensity, bypass and lock. Indicator LEDs are provided to left/right signal presence, bypass, lock and power status.
Small speaker systems
MaxxBass significantly enhances audio systems with small speakers such as PA in restaurants and retail. These systems typically equipped with small ceiling mount speakers will be dramatically enhanced by allowing listeners to enjoy the deep bass tones in music without adding a subwoofer. It will eliminate system distortion caused by trying to push the PA to deliver frequencies its speakers cannot reproduce.
Clubs, DJ, Band Systems
MaxxBass can be utilized on both main and monitor speakers. On the main speakers with subwoofers, MaxxBass delivers a deeper bass sensation without over- driving the subwoofer. Connect MaxxBass between the system's crossover unit low (frequency) output and the subwoofer amplifier. A main speaker system not including a subwoofer can achieve the sound of a subwoofer by using MaxxBass. MaxxBass can be utilized on both main and monitor speakers. On-stage monitors normally use smaller speakers, either in side-field or personal monitoring setups. Use MaxxBass to enhance the on-stage monitoring system to allow it to deliver a fuller dee er and thus less harsh sound. Sound reinforcement
Large scale subwoofer arrays with full range bass also benefit from MaxxBass to increase the bass presence. This allows a reduction in the number of amplifiers and subwoofers to reach the desired bass level.
The MaxxBass Algorithm
Bass reproduction is increasingly problematic as audio system size and power consumption shrink creating an electro- acoustic bottleneck between customer expectations and the physics of bass reproduction. The solution is not to change physics, but to include the science of human perception, psycho-acoustic to the problem. MaxxBass uses the psycho-acoustics of human perception to improve bass response.
MaxxBass is patented psycho-acoustic bass frequency extension technology (U. S. Patent #5,930,373) that provides perceived bass frequency response below the physical speaker cutoff in an audio system. MaxxBass utilizes the principle of the missing fundamental, which creates the sensation of low frequencies by generating a carefully calculated series of harmonics designed to simulate the auditory experience caused by the missing fundamental pitch. These harmonics extend the virtual frequency response up to 11/2 octaves or two-thirds below the physical speaker cutoff frequency without perceived distortion or increased power consumption.
In the example below, MaxxBass processing is used to extend the perceived low frequency response of low cost speakers with 100 Hz cutoff frequency typical of multimedia speakers and televisions. MaxxBass will allow the listener to perceive a 70 Hz tone even though the speaker is physically not capable of reproducing this frequency
The input signal to MaxxBass is split into two parts; the crossover Frequency (controlled by the Frequency knob) determines the split point. High frequencies are merely passed to the output (to be added back to the signal). The bass signal is analyzed by MaxxBass, which creates a carefully calculated series of harmonics of these low frequencies. The dynamics and the loudness of the original bass are duplicated in these harmonics to create the most natural-sounding enhancement of the original bass.
