How do I create an MP3?

by Greg Ripes

To create an MP3 you will need an MP3 encoder and an audio file in an appropriate format. Once you have an encoder there are a few parameters you need to set. The encoding process requires that you select the bit rate, bit depth, and whether the file is stereo or mono. Most MP3's are encoded at a bit rate of 128 kbps. All encoders have a selection for bit rate anywhere between 20 and 320 kbps. The higher the kbps the better the sound quality and the larger the file size. When an audio file is encoded at 128 kbps, the dynamic range and upper harmonic structure is almost always notably altered, making the file sound artificial, especially in classical or acoustic recordings. When the bit rate is increased to 256 kbps the original dynamic range and high harmonics are better preserved.
