Digital Audio File Size Comparison

By Kevin P Murphy

January 15, 2002

The more data used to describe the waveform, the more hard-disk memory used for storage, and the more RAM-intensive the processing. Here are some comparisons for 1 minute of stereo audio:

  44.1kHz 48kHz 96kHz
8-bit 5MB 6MB 12MB
16-bit 10MB* 12MB 24MB
20-bit 13MB 14MB 28MB
24-bit 15MB 17MB 34MB**

* 16bit/44.1 kHz is the standard for audio CD's

** 24bit/96 kHz is becoming the standard for DVD's
