Recording Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival

Steinberg’s Nuendo recently was used to record the Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas TX.. There was a great team of people involved with the project including Elliot Scheiner, Ed Cherney, Jayce Murphy, Fred Maher, Matt Scheiner, Nathan Seyer, Charlie Boswell and Kelly Stuart from AMD and myself. The computers used were Verari DAW 64 with 4 gigs of RAM running dual opteron processors with 1 TB of internal storage using 7200 RPM SATA drives in RAID 0 as well as an external Fibre Channel SAN on two of the machines.

Each machine was recording 48 tracks wide of 24 bit 96k audio. The festival lasted three days with a number of seminars and performances. The computers were running Nuendo 2.20.33 with 2 RME MADI cards and 48 channels of Euphonix converters going in and out over MADI.

Saturday was a full day of performances with 2 Nuendo stations, one in the of Record Plant Remote truck with Kooster McAllister and one at front of house. Basically, each computer is set to a splitter from the console and the acts would alternate live boards allowing the one act to be set up, checking levels while the other act was performing. The systems ran alternating for over 12 hours without any problems whatsoever.

Performers on Saturday included Styx, a shredder clinic with Tony Franklin formerly of the Firm and George Lynch, Del Castillio,Dan Tyminski of "Brother, Where Art Thou" fame, Eric Johnson, Johnny Lang, Guitar Center's Guitarmaggadon contest finals, Doyle Bramhill, John Mayer, JJ Cale with Eric Clapton sitting in, Robert Randolph, and an all star jam with Eric Clapton.

Sunday the concert moved to the Cotton Bowl from the Esplande where the concerts were held on Saturday. Two remote trucks were used for Sunday with no Front of House feed once again alternating acts. The remote trucks were from MTV out of Nashville with a Neve Capricorn digital console and Remote Recording Services with an analog Neve VR console. Ed Cherney was stationed in the MTV truck and Elliot Scheiner worked in the Remote Recording Services truck.

Performers on Sunday included Neal Schon and Jonathon Caine, Sonny Landreth, Larry Carlton, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheney, Joe Walsh, Booker T and the MGs, James Taylor, Jeff Beck, BB King, Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana, Robert Cray, Steve Vai, David Hildago of Los Lobos, Jimmie Vaughn, ZZ Top and of course Eric Clapton.

I think that the concert will be on pay per view in Early July followed by a showing on PBS. The concert I believe was also taped on high definition video. I heard several people mention that a possible DVD will be released later but I am not certain.

Nuendo worked great for the whole show which was of course a demanding task. Everyone involved was really pleased with the setup and many comments were made on the great sound of the system. The dual opteron AMD machines from Verari were not really being pushed at all. It was great seeing Nuendo great for such an important event and I was glad to be a part of the great team involved.
