There
are two or three different MIDI ports on the back
of most synthesizers labels "IN", "OUT",
and "THRU". Lets take a look at these
different ports for a second.
- IN -
This port is used to get
MIDI information in to a
synthesizer. You could also
think of this as a receiving
port.
- OUT
- This port is used to transmit
MIDI information from a synthesizer
or MIDI device.
- THRU
- The THRU port simply sends
along any information that
is coming in the IN port.
This is useful for connecting
many devices in a line (also
known as "Daisy Chaining").
It is important to remember
that you must always connect an OUT to an IN, or
a THRU to an IN. You never connect OUT to OUT or
any other combination. Let's look at a simple MIDI
connection.

In this setup, providing that
all of the synthesizers are set to the same channel
(see below), if you play on Keyboard "A" MIDI
will be sent along to keyboard "B" and
to the Sound Module. If you play on Keyboard "B",
MIDI will only be sent along to Keyboard "A",
and not the sound module.
